About Tim Bednar
I am a maker at heart, and my journey is a winding one.
After starting at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, I spent many years as a minister and then web developer before returning to the furniture design and woodcraft. In 2023, I started my design studio in Stillwater, Minnesota. I had a simple goal to create beautiful, functional, and satisfying furniture.

My pieces are not just about aesthetics; they’re about how we live. As a father of five, the pandemic forced me to think about how work, play, hospitality, and family all exist in a single space. I believe the objects around us shape our mood and emotion, and that good furniture makes an impact.
I believe that beauty is evidence of care and attention to craft. We are living in a world that is bland and vacant. Our things are just good enough for the moment, and we rarely notice that beauty is absent. I do not believe that art is a concept or abstract, and furniture is the art of making beautiful things through attention to detail and care of craft. Well made things connects us to each other and the future.
Why I Make Furniture
As a neurodivergent adult, I manage my environment to bring a sense of calm and focus to my life. I use a practice called knolling, which involves arranging objects in an organized and visually pleasing way. This habit helps keep spaces uncluttered and items accessible, which aids both focus and peace. It is an activity that guides my design.
The principles of regularity, orderliness, symmetry, and simplicity are at the core of my aesthetic. I make furniture that satisfies our inherent need for our spaces to feel like a completed whole. The lack closure in a space caused by bad or broken furnishings negatively affects our mood and well-being. So I prefer trays over drawers, open volumes not hidden compartments, segmented surfaces rather than monolithic panels. When storage is needed, I make it accessible filling it with light.
My studio furniture is an antidote to consumerism. Acquiring just one bespoke item can start a journey of taking back our spaces and our lives.
My Craft and Materials
I combine hand tools with modern machinery to create durable, beautiful objects. I resist industrial processes like CNC machining and prefer solid wood over MDF, plywood, or veneers. I embrace the craft of hand-making, which means I strive for excellence but not machine-like precision. My finishing process is centered on longevity and repair. I use a shellac base with a buffed hard-wax finish to remove VOCs, plastic feel, and difficult repairs. This is not fast furniture. It is made to last for generations, and I will personally repair any object I create.
Made for You
For me, beauty is the feeling of satisfaction—the pleasure that comes from having an object made specifically for you. Good furniture should not just look beautiful; it should evoke sentimentality and memory. The best part of my work is collaborating with individuals and families to create something that is unique and meaningful.
