My goal for this desk is to maximizes utility of a work desk while honoring the desire for visually ordered and uncluttered home. Working from home often means that your work life is on display even after hours, but this desk allows you to literally put your work out of sight.
The ides behind project is inspired by classic forms such as the secretary or armoire desk. It functions as a versatile office desk with a secondary monitor that can be closed, allowing it to harmoniously integrate with the room’s decor.
- Flip top: Open the center top section to reveal a second monitor and laptop workspace.
- Drawers: Left and right drawers provide just enough storage for work and home essentials
- Cord management: String power cables from the interior work space to hidden compartment on the left and right.
- Traditional Joinery: Built using finger joints and loose mortise and tenon joinery to withstand everyday use and last for decades.
- Lift assist: The center flip top uses heavy duty hardware to open and close the top with a custom stay to keep the top open to steady the mounted monitor.
I selected two premium domestic hardwoods. The cherry case and legs will deepen into a rich, regal burgundy over time and black walnut top achieves deep espresso tones and figured grain pattern.

The top features highly figured black walnut, finished with traditional shellac and hard wax to ensure a lifetime of daily use.
