C-shape side table
Refined Approach to a Modern Classic
The C-shape table is a familiar answer to a common modern problem: how to bring a surface close enough for a laptop, a notebook, or a morning coffee while keeping your living space open. My idea is to refine this archetype by focusing entirely on material integrity, light proportions, and uncompromising craftsmanship.
- Effortless Utility: The low-profile base slides easily under sofas, sectionals, and lounge chairs, bringing the cantilevered top right to your lap.
- Architectural Lightness: The split-post upright design reduces weight, and the beveled top makes it feel airy.
- Traditional Joinery: Built using time-tested open-faced mortise and tenon joinery designed to withstand everyday use.
- Repairable Natural Finish: Finished with natural shellac that protect the wood while allowing it to be easily maintained or repaired if needed.
Where my Cantilevered Side Table makes a dramatic, sculptural design statement, this c-shape side table offers grounded, architectural simplicity. Its dual-upright frame creates negative space making it incredibly light while ensuring absolute stability.

Here is what makes my C-shape side table unique
This table celebrates the intentional pairing of premium domestic hardwoods. The top is shaped from cherry, selected for its warm, radiating grain character that will deepen beautifully over time. Supporting it is a robust, solid white oak base, utilizing traditional joinery techniques to ensure a lifetime of daily use. Every surface is finished by hand using shellac and hard wax natural finish, highlighting the authentic texture of the wood grain without the plastic feel of synthetic sealers.

Joinery makes the design
The C-shape table is a ubiquitous 20th century form with an early example by Eileen Gray called the Adjustable Table E1027 (1927). Most pieces are manufactured from metal to achieve the cantilevered requirements.
My C-shape table uses traditional wood joinery instead of fasteners or metal. It is engineered to naturally absorb movement without wobbling. Most other C-shape tables feel clunky, over-engineered and heavy. Contrast this to my design which feels light and airy without sacrificing height and table size.

The parts start with hand selected white oak for grain direction and clarity which are then milled flat and square. This is not an industrial process, but each table is built and assembled by hand. Each part is measured and marked with a knife for accuracy, then cut with a dado stack on the cabinet table saw. Each is dry fit marked for assembly. Then the top braces and feet are further shaped before final glue-up.
The end result is a solid leg frame that is light and architecturally capable of supporting a large 23 x 15 inch table top. The top is beveled which makes entire piece feel solid but light. Then many thin coats of shellac is applied to the top to give the figured grain top depth.

In this piece the leg frame is made from six interlocking parts where joinery precision is key to the stability of table.
This can only be achieved with with material selected for grain and clarity, sharp tools and patience with marking and measuring.
