My Drink table Design story
I like to focus on small and intimate spaces, and am attracted to multi-functional furniture. So I became fascinated by drink tables which are meant to hold just one or two items, like a drink, a book, or a remote control.
My design approach centered on creating a table that is portable and versatile using the fewest materials possible to keep it affordable. The result is an understated cantilevered top held at a perfect right angle, grounded by a pedestal base engineered to resist movement.
The result is that my drink tables become intimate objects capable of holding your morning tea and some knitting. And sturdy enough to host drinks between friends or snacks for the big game.
In the end, my drink table is an ideal first custom piece, offering the quality and attention to detail of fine furniture in an accessible and practical size.
I do not want my creativity to be a prisoner of my woodcraft skills. But my work often emerges from my skills and experience as a maker.
To make sure the piece is sturdy and resistant to racking forces, I relied on traditional castle and bridle joints.
If executed precisely, these small tables feel sturdy in use and light-weight when moved from place to place.
As I use everything I make, I soon figured out that my normal shellac and hard wax finish did not adequately prevent normal stains.
So for this project, I experimented for the first time with a hardwax oil finish with good results.
