Here is what makes my lounge chair unique

This table celebrates the intentional pairing of premium exotic and domestic hardwoods. The seat is shaped from mahogany, selected for its interlocking grain character and rich warm browns. Supporting it is a robust, solid red oak base, utilizing Japanese joinery techniques to ensure a lifetime of daily use.

By relying on precise, time-tested interlocking joinery rather than industrial hardware, the chair remains visually light without sacrificing absolute stability.

Materials: Seat sculpted from deep reddish-brown African mahogany contrasted with straight architectural grain of domestic red oak. Other material options include: cherry, black walnut, sapele, maple and ash.

All natural finish: No VOC shellac and hard wax finish.

Origin: Hand-milled, assembled, and finished in Minnesota

Chairmaking

Making a chair is risky. Unlike a table or cabinet, a chair must actively respond to the dynamic forces of a human body. Every time you lean back, shift your weight, or settle into a corner to read, the frame experiences intense compression and racking forces.

To create a piece that feels light and airy without sacrificing absolute structural integrity, this lounge chair is engineered to naturally absorb that movement entirely through precision joinery—completely avoiding modern metal fasteners, screws, or brackets.

Here is a brief run-down of my chairmaking journey:

Material Selection: I hand-select domestic red oak and premium African mahogany, paying strict attention to grain direction, structural clarity, and natural figure.
Precision Milling: The raw boards are carefully milled flat and square before being marked individually by hand with a striking knife for absolute accuracy.
Fit: The joinery—including the bridle joints and mortise-and-tenon connections—are cut using a dado stack and tenon jib on the cabinet table saw to ensuring a seamless fit. Then each bridle joint is pegged with a through dowel.
Housed Framework: To lock the component together, I slotted the leg frame into a square-bottomed groves cut across the grain in the seat and back. This prevents twisting and sagging.
Sculpted Comfort: The bottom seat cradle and the supportive back framework are further shaped and sculpted to create an inviting pocket without the need of cushions.

The process began with a completely realized CAD drawing to establish the baseline geometry. However, working with wood and the human form requires listening to your instincts.

During the physical build, I lowered the seat height, increased the splay of the legs, and refined the overall proportions to achieve a more relaxed, “laid-back” stance.

The result is a deep, wide seat combined with a gentle slope that provides exceptional seating comfort for hours of reading or relaxation.
